Bleeding gums is one of the classic signs of gum disease. The office of Donna Vagnozzi-Bucci is one of the leading facilities in the Princeton area for advanced periodontal therapy and the treatment of gum disease.
We are fortunate to have Periodontist, David Heering, DMD on staff. Dr. Heering treats bleeding gums, gum disease and gingivitis through a wide range of general dentistry treatments.
What Causes Bleeding Gums?
Bleeding gums is often a clinical sign of gingivitis, an early stage of gum disease. It is also possible that bleeding gums can be caused by aggressive flossing, tooth brushing, or using a toothbrush with too firm of bristles. Pregnant women may also experience bleeding gums as a result of hormonal changes in the body.

What is Gum Disease?
Gum disease is an inflammation of the gums cause by a bacterial infection. Gum disease affects the gum tissue as well as supporting bone. Gum disease may affect one tooth or many teeth.
Symptoms of Gum Disease
- Bleeding gums or red, swollen or sore gums
- Receding gums
- Loose teeth
- Mouth sores or pus between gums and teeth
- Bad breath (halitosis)
- Changes in the fit of dentures

Bleeding Gums What to Expect
Treatment for bleeding gums should always be handled by a dentist. Never attempt to self treat bleeding gums or use over the counter medications without the advisement of a dental professional. Depending on your condition, there are a number of treatment options for bleeding gums.
- Non Surgical Treatment
Even in severe cases, non-surgical periodontal therapy almost always precedes surgical treatment. This allows the Periodontist to improve the overall tissue quality prior to surgery and limit the areas requiring surgery.The first line of treatment for periodontal therapy is an intensive cleaning called scaling, to remove plaque and tartar from beneath the gum line. The tooth roots may also be planed to smooth root surfaces, allowing gum tissue to heal and reattach to the tooth. Antibacterial rinses and other aids may be recommended to reduce inflammation and cure gingivitis.
- Surgical Treatment
In some cases, surgical treatment may be necessary to cure gum disease. Periodontal surgery may include gum grafting, crown exposure, or dental implants. Learn more
