A More Comfortable Treatment for Gum Recession

Gum recession Pennington, NJ dentistAt Family and Spa Dentistry, our goal is to provide patients with a comfortable and relaxing dental experience that delivers beautiful, long-lasting results. As part of that mission, we are now pleased to offer the Chao Pinhole Surgical Technique™ as a more comfortable and convenient alternative to traditional gum recession treatments. Dr. David Heering, a highly trained and experienced periodontist, can use this innovative method to repair your gum line for a healthier and more aesthetically appealing smile.

Traditional Gum Recession Treatments

The Chao Pinhole Surgical Technique can be performed as an alternative to gum grafting surgery, one of the most common, traditional treatments for gum recession. Gum grafting often requires the dentist to remove a piece of gum tissue from the roof of your mouth using a scalpel. The tissue is then stitched on top of the area where your gums have receded. Because of the incisions and stitches involved in gum grafting, patients may need one to two weeks or more of recovery time. During this time you may experience pain and discomfort that can prevent you from eating many types of food as well as brushing or flossing.

The Chao Pinhole Surgical Technique

You can avoid the pain and discomfort of gum grafting surgery with the Chao Pinhole Surgical Technique. This conservative, less invasive treatment allows Dr. Heering to repair your gum line without the use of grafts, incisions, or stitches. Instead, he will first numb the area being treated to make you feel comfortable and then make a tiny “pinhole” entry point in the gum tissue. Then, with a special needle-like tool, he can gently massage down the gums, using the existing tissue to cover the over-exposed parts of your teeth. Finally, Dr. Heering will insert tiny strips of collagen that help hold the newly contour gum line in place. After this procedure, patients should be able to eat and drink normally within an hour. The should be little to no discomfort, and the tiny pinhole entry point will often heal within a day.
