Dental Bridge What to Expect
Basically, a dental bridge is a series of dental crowns, used to replace one or more missing teeth. Dental bridges can either be removable or fixed and made from a variety of tooth-like materials.
Types of Dental Bridges
- Removable Dental Bridge
A removable dental bridge is best used as a short term solution to maintain tooth position while a patient is preparing to have a fixed dental bridge or dental implant placed. While the cost of a removable dental bridge is appealing, they do not offer good long term benefits and frequently require replacement or repair.
- Fixed Dental Bridge
A fixed dental bridge is permanently placed in the mouth, generally connected to two dental crowns which cover the teeth on either side of the missing tooth. Another option is to have a fixed dental bridge secured by dental implants instead of dental crowns. Dental implants may offer a better long term solution and do not require preparation of neighboring teeth.
Dental Bridge vs. Implant
Our dentists will consider many things when helping you decide if a dental bridge or dental implant is right for you. While a dental implant is the most life like replacement for a missing tooth, not everyone is a candidate. It is important that you have adequate bone structure to support the dental implant. Depending on the location of the missing tooth or teeth, a dental implant may not be a good choice.
